Taikodom science fiction universe at the 2008 Fantasticon Seminar opening

Perhaps one of the most fascinating things in Taikodom is its Fiction Universe. It was created by Hoplon and two well-known writers of Brazilian Science Fiction, Gerson Lodi-Ribeiro and João Marcelo Beraldo. Both writers joined Tarqüínio Teles (who conceived Taikodom) and Roctavio de Castro (“The Eternal Return” comic book writer and manager of the Taikodom universe) in a round table entitled Universos Ficcionais Compartilhados: transformando limitações em triunfos de enredo (“Shared Science Fiction Universes: making triumphant plots out of limitations”) at Fantasticon 2008 - II Simpósio de Literatura Fantástica, in São Paulo.

“It’s been a strong tendency in Fantastic Literature to see people starting to use the literary technique called “Shared Science Fiction Universes”, in which several writers share definitions and characters from their fiction and usually refers to events occurred on other writers’ fictions. In Brazil, Hoplon Infotainment and Gerson Lodi-Ribeiro worked together on that technique to design the hard science fiction project called Taikodom – an MSG (Massive Social Game) which besides a game, still counts on comics, short stories and sci-fi novels. But how do we make so many works and media consistent and coherent among them? What should we do in order to face and solve technical and literary difficulties? What are the right decisions to take concerning project coherence?”

 

  Besides the game, there are short stories and graphic novels on the science fiction universe of Taikodom

Besides the story which goes from these days to the XXIII century, and all the content created specifically for the game, Hoplon has launched a collection of short stories, which may be download only at the Portuguese official webpage (the works are just in Portuguese at the moment), and the two first issues of graphic novel “The Eternal Return” as well. There are also three upcoming books: "Despertar", by Beraldo and then "Legados", by Lodi-Ribeiro (first novel of the "Protocolos de Etrúria" trilogy).

The round table is set to July the 5th, Saturday, from 10am to 12am. Fantasticon goes on until Sunday, July 6, at the Colégio Marista Arquidiocesano’s amphitheatre, Vila Mariana, São Paulo, Brazil.
